Junior Apprentices Are Hired

The Marketing moguls of the future were gathered together under the banner of “The Very Young Apprentices” as part of National Apprenticeship Week in an event organised by Newcastle Education Business Partnership. Forty eight pupils aged 9 to 11 from eight primary schools in Newcastle took part in a mock marketing challenge where the winners would be ‘employed’ as Junior Apprentices at BUPA, sponsors of the Great North Run. Their challenge was to create a mascot and a TV viewers’ competition that would capture the ethos of the north east’s great sporting and charity event. The aim of the event was to raise awareness of Apprenticeships and the types of skills employers are looking for to Primary School pupils and their influencers. Working to deadlines as a team, being creative, discussing ideas and giving presentations are skills that providers of apprenticeships are looking to develop and the pupils responded to the challenge to practice these skills with great enthusiasm.

Caitlin Tweddell, aged 10 from West Walker Primary said, “I felt like a real business apprentice today. Our team wanted to get across the message that anyone can take part but everyone is a winner”

Kati Makepeace and Jennifer Burnett from BUPA attended the event and had the extremely difficult task of deciding on the winning team. Eventually choosing Stocksfield Avenue Primary School as the winners, Kati commented,

“I was amazed by the creativity of the designs and the confidence of the children in their presentations. They encapsulated the health, charity and spirit aspects of the Great North Run and presented their proposals with humour and confidence”.

The schools taking part wereStocksfield Avenue, WestWalker, Farne, Hilton, St Bede’s, St Catherine’s,West Jesmondand Knop Law.

I am delighted to announce my promotion to the position of General Manager of Newcastle Education Business Partnership (EBP) with effect from 1st October 2011.

I have worked at the EBP for many years and have experience in all aspects of work related learning delivery and project management, in recent years undertaking a senior management role.

The continued success of the EBP in this difficult economic climate can be attributed to a number of factors including the tremendous contribution made by Gillian Bulman through her work in the role of Chief Executive and this must be acknowledged with great gratitude.

The ever changing environment within which the EBP operates demands a quick response, flexibility and adaptability. The committed and talented EBP team works diligently to help raise standards in schools and the achievements of young people through delivering a comprehensive portfolio of high quality products and services in addition to offering customised or bespoke programmes.

The range and type of work undertaken by the EBP continues to expand at a great pace and through appropriate Continuing Professional Development the skills of the team are regularly updated to comply with quality standards.

The long term strategy of the organisation is to become synonymous with ‘quality’ and to always be the first choice for work related and education business links partnership working.

May I take this opportunity to invite you to join us as we embark on this exciting new chapter in the life of Newcastle Education Business Partnership.

Your continued support and friendship is vital to the success of the EBP and I look forward to working with you in the future.

Newcastle Education Business Partnership is delighted that in 2010 it has achieved not only it’s fourth Investors in People Award but to have been recognised as an Investors in People Silver organisation. Achieving Investors in People Silver shows a forward thinking and expansive approach to cascading best practice through every level of the organisation. It demonstrates a progressive approach to business improvement through people.

“Achieving a Silver Award is an accomplishment of the highest order. This is a tremendous achievement, congratulations”

Robert Macleod MBE, Managing Director, Investors In People North East.

To achieve the Investors in People Silver Award was not an easy task, taking into account the fact that we are a relatively small organisation and that it has been a very challenging year for the business as a whole. It requires in depth research and interviews and rigorous examination of procedures and systems. To achieve the Silver Award organisation must qualify and achieve all of the Investors in People standard indicators as well as a whole range of additional indicators beyond the standard.

We are delighted to achieve the Silver Award and look forward to continuing to thrive through our investment in each other.

Research shows that there is a strong link between a buoyant economy with plenty of opportunities for work and a thriving community. Evidence suggests that when people are in work it affects many aspects of society, the crime rate drops, health and lifestyles are improved significantly.

One of the most urgent challenges facing our country today is ensuring that all young people progress in education and training. The UK needs to develop a more highly skilled workforce to compete internationally in a fast changing global economy.

The UK ranks 27th out of 30 Organisation for Education Cooperation & Development (OECD) countries on participation at age 17.

There is clear evidence of the negative consequences of not being engaged in education or training at 16 – 18 years.

Many of these young people are from disadvantaged areas of the city and there is strong correlation to later negative outcomes, such as unemployment, having poor health and low income. Outcomes for young people aged between 16 and 18 in a job without formal training are only marginally better than those not in employment, education or training (NEET).

RPA is a historic step to ensure that all young people have the same opportunities and expectations of success. Not only will it raise the aspirations and expectations of young people but it will also yield long –term benefits for the economy and society as a whole.

If you want to get involved and leave us some feedback about what your thoughts on this subject or you require more information please feel free to start your discussion below.
